ROYALTY TO GRACE ORGANIC PLANET FESTIVAL IN EUREKA AUGUST 24
Two “queens,” the world's largest organic salad, nonstop music and dozens of exhibitors showcasing healthy, non-toxic products will be on the Eureka waterfront on Sunday, August 24, when the popular Organic Planet Festival returns for its fourth year.
The day-long event, northern California's only organic festival, is presented by the Eureka-based educational group Californians for Alternatives to Toxics (CATs) at Halvorsen Park, three blocks west of Highway 101 at the foot of L Street.
The fun-filled and informative event will feature two queens of music, legendary Grammy winner Queen Ida and her Zydeco Band and roots reggae artist Queen Omega and Soul Majestic. Don’t miss local artists Jah Sun, Womama, and the Jenifer Breeze Band who will get your hips shaking and your feet stomping.
They will complement a wide variety of activities, workshops, guest speakers and scores of exhibition booths showcasing natural products—all focused on the festival’s underlying theme of transforming every-day practices from harmful to healthy.
The keynote speaker, Dr. Tyrone Hayes, will explain his research into the effects of pesticides on amphibians and how that relates to human health. Other speakers will explore topics ranging from gardening organically, “locavore” skills, and “your pesticide free city”—while two dozen community groups will be on hand as well to further understanding of important local environmental issues.
In addition to such food for thought, festival sponsor Eureka Natural Foods will feed the hungry with the World’s Largest Organic Salad. Meanwhile Wildberries Marketplace will host a Kids’ Village and Petting Zoo and The North Coast Co-Op will have a drawing for $1,000 of food gift certificates. Other sponsors include Ray’s Food Place, Humboldt Creamery, Organic Valley, Eel River Brewery, All-Around Sound Services, Clif Bar and Santa Cruz Organic.
If a reduced carbon foot-print is a priority - or if both pocket and gas tank are empty - check out the Shuttle Bus running every half hour from the Arcata Co-Op and the HSU 14th and Union St. parking lots directly to the event. As an effort to save attendees money and emphasize alternative transportation, there will be a secure bike-check run by like-minded friends at HSU’s Campus Center for Appropriate Technology (CCAT) and Green Wheels.
For the outdoor-enthusiasts, be sure to visit the veggie oil and solar powered National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS) bus on a West Coast pit stop as part of their “Creating a Climate for Change” tour. Featured presentations will include vegetable oil fuels, leaving “no trace” while in the great outdoors, and beginning hands-on rock climbing on their climbing wall.
Festival admission is $7 in advance, $10 at the gate. Kids 12 and under get in free. All attendees will have a chance to win one of CATs’ 40 fabulous door prizes.
